CWH260 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Can You Embrace Vulnerability and Successfully Transition Leadership? With Rayell Grayson, Head/Heart Therapy
“I like control. I like to know things. I like to know how I can prepare, and when you're in this position, you cannot––and I think that is the biggest thing that I have not been able to digest fully.” - Rayell Grayson
Finally! A catch-up with Rayell Grayson, LCPC CADC, owner and president of Head/Heart Therapy, the practice I built, owned for a decade, and sold last year. Tea is spilled, fears are expressed, and love is freely shared. Our convo demonstrates the myriad ways owners can show up––for ourselves, our employees, and the leaders who will one day succeed us, especially if that future owner holds multiple intersectional identities.
Vulnerability doesn’t come easy to Rayell. I can’t blame her. Consider the ways our society undermines, excludes, or just plain abuses Black women. Practice ownership gave Rayell the space to take risks on her terms. “I'm evolving into my vulnerable girl era!” she confirms.
Convincing Rayell to take the reins of Head/Heart was not easy. “I was so scared,” she recalls. Again, I can’t blame her. I also couldn’t let her pass up the opportunity. “I don't think I ever knew that I could own a group practice. And, to be honest,” she says, “I didn't know any Black people at all who were practice owners coming from community mental health.”
While Rayell possesses an innate ability to lead with a smart heart, she continues to refine her skills. “Stepping into this place of my own agency [and] widening my own capacity, doing my own work, being in therapy, being intentional about what I want and how I show up…I’ve softened so much!” she says. “I’m here!”
