275 - Marc Mathys - Uniting the Collective Beyond Right and Wrong Despite Disagreement

“There is no super-conspiracy that's trying to divide us. We're pretty clever to do this on our own with this belief system that I'm right and the others are wrong.” - Marc Mathys

Oh, fellow therapists, how I love you! That said, I'm super-concerned about our capacity to move through interpersonal challenges exacerbated by, among other things, a volatile election season. My question is: How do we model being with folks outside the profession––even those we disagree with––if we can't make space for complexities of thought and motivation within our own community?

There isn't a single, easy answer. But, some dialogs can expose our biases while expanding our vocabulary in preparation for the societal-wide conversations to come.

Marc Mathys considers Spiral Dynamics a solid foundation on which to build. He's an accomplished specialist in organizational transformation, a certified professional coach, and a social entrepreneur with multiple degrees, including an MBA in responsible management and leadership. As co-founder of Paradigm 21, he guides organizations towards agile distributed models while serving as a sought-after consultant and trainer of spiral dynamics and system change.

You may have already guessed that Marc and I spent the bulk of this episode exploring the trajectory of the collective. What patterns are playing out? Where are the avenues for evolution? What can we, as individuals, do to support system-wide changes in our profession, our families, or the world?

"The most interesting questions always start with what if," Marc says. What if…we weren't so quick to affix binary labels of right or wrong to everyone and everything? "How do we organize ourselves in a meaningful way that helps us get what we want?" he asks. "It's not a question of more government. It's not a political question." Perhaps that's what makes it so hard to answer. Humans prefer tidy, easy-to-conceptualize solutions. It's a cosmic joke that resets every generation with the promise that we'll get it right this time.

Spiral Dynamics provides a structure to form mutable options of thought and action in an increasingly complex world. We can then reevaluate and retire what's no longer needed. The caveat here is that we're not exempt from individual liability for systemic issues or spared the hard work of self-examination. That's what healing is all about. And, maybe, this time we will get it right.
