274 - Jo Darling - How to Honor Healing as a Collaborative Act

“I don't believe good medicine is about what somebody does to you; I think it's what you do together.” - Jo Darling

Self-care is a basic human right. Sadly, intuitive healing practices like acupuncture are often dismissed, especially in Western society, as woo-woo or pseudoscientific time-wasters. The assumptions keep many from adding modalities like acupuncture to their well-being toolkit. Thank goodness for practitioners like the delightful Jo Darling in Brighton, UK!

Jo is passionate about women’s health and healing. She’s also co-host Anne Remy’s acupuncturist, so we’ll finally get to the core of Anne’s cross liver sitch. Are you curious about how acupuncture works and why this Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has stood the test of time? Jo offers clear, supportive answers––and she does so with a delightful laugh!

“I think that's one of the biggest problems we have with the health industry, the way that we view health in the Western culture, that we often hand our health over to somebody else,” opines Jo, whose life’s work embraces the mind-body connection. Acupuncture holds that our body hums with interconnected energetic pathways. Improving the flow of that energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”), can relieve pain, calm chronic conditions, and restore emotional balance. “There are points on the body which are gateways to certain functions and things that we can do to change our health,” Jo explains. “It's bloody wonderful!”

Acupuncturists are schooled in a whole-body approach to healing, addressing a situation's yin and yang (or opposite but complementary forces), rather than simply the presenting symptoms.  “A true acupuncturist is always seeking to treat the root of your problem,” Jo affirms. “If you think of a tree, the symptoms are the leaves or what you see. But the root of the problem is the deepest reason why this is going on. We're always trying to treat that root.”

Spirit or intuition plays a vital role in TCM diagnosis. Too often, however, folks confuse spirit with a religious experience, thus shying away from accessing this powerful tool. “The thing about spiritual work and working with spirit is that everybody has some level of ability,” offers Jo. “It's just that some tune into it, some don't. And some are further down their path than others.”

It’s time we tuned into our overwrought brains and overworked bodies.
