267 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Do We Make Wonderful, Healthy Spaces for Practice Owners AND Their Staff?

“My call to action for every practice owner is to take that honest look at your skills and find support where you don't have the skills.” - Sarah Buino

Not gonna lie: It’s a rough time to be a practice owner right now. Here’s the good news, cultivated from 18 episodes of conversations with burnt-out practice owners and some of their employees: all is not lost. I’ve got survey responses that prove we can still band together to form the practices we desperately want to participate in. But, owners, we gotta have a chat…

My initial goal with this survey was to find out what was up with all these disgruntled employee posts in chat groups. Was it all on them? Cue the eye rolls from every practice employee ever. This survey challenged my assumptions and biases in a big way. It wasn’t “all them” as I’d assumed. Employees are feeling generally underpaid, undervalued, and undersupported. Meanwhile, a lot of practice owners feel underappreciated and overwhelmed.

The data also emphasized chasms in our understanding of the realities of daily practice life––caseloads and onboarding, supervision and power differentials, profit distribution, and benefits packages. The list is long. Overlay everyone’s concerns with the additional burden of our capitalist, racist, and ableist structure, and, whew! Everyone’s dealing with a lot.

When I think back on my experience as a practice owner, I can now recognize that I caused my staff a lot of harm as I tried to figure out how to run the business. You, dear practice owner, don’t have to make those same mistakes. Find outside support and enter into good-faith discussions with your employees.
