257 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Do You Build a Liberation-Focused Practice in This Flaming Capitalist Junkyard? with Jessica Eubanks-Chavira
"It doesn't matter if you're trying to do liberation work without white supremacy in it; white supremacy is in the room!" - Jessica Eubanks Chavira
Liberation is a two-way street, dear practice owner. Making an innovative, enlightened leap forward means going up against old ways of doing things. Unsustainable management practices! Limiting mindsets! Antiquated business models! To say nothing of capitalism, racism, or the patriarchy.
Change, however, is possible. When people come to me for consulting advice, the first question I ask is, "What do you want for yourself?" Some clients realize that the therapy practice they want is hella far from what they currently have. Jessica Eubanks Chavira, LCSW-S, wanted to liberate herself and her community. Once she articulated that desire, Jessica divorced herself from white supremacy culture and created Purple Couch Counseling, a sacred space cultivated specifically for Black womxn healing.
"I know things are not gonna be easy, but I wanna make it easy," says Jessica of the radically different, culturally focused environment she's brought to life. "I really enjoy being a creator [and] an entrepreneur; I just didn't know that I could do it in a way that aligns with me. It's like, 'Oh! I have permission.' Oh, yeah, you do! And you'll make more money."
Getting free begins by answering my question with honesty and compassion (homework!). Jessica agrees: “That's the only way you're gonna be able to have this big dream or big vision that you wanna create.”
