251 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: Are You Experienced…or Just Highly Educated? With Aaron Karmin
“We all had to go through that post-graduation, pre-independent licensure. That's a time to work with things that are gonna make you uncomfortable. That's the time to experience and explore because the stakes are low.” - Aaron Karmin
Experience matters. Whether you’re a member of a group practice or on your own, a background in different levels of mental health care ultimately supports your future professional development. At the very least, you amass an incredible library of anecdotes to regale younger colleagues.
Aaron Karmin, LCPC, is a 360º type of practitioner who’s worked in research departments, as an intake specialist, a telephone counselor, an experiential counselor (think: whitewater rafting for teens), a grad student supervisor, and a solo therapist. He’s a Gottman-certified Seven Principles educator with an advanced certification in stress management and the author of two popular books on anger management. Aaron’s thoughtful insights are a welcome counterpoint to the frenetic changes taking place in our profession.
“The rise of teletherapy makes [it] such a different dynamic to go out on your own,” says Aaron, who has been practicing solo for eight years. While he’s not knocking his freedom, Aaron is quick to credit participation in myriad care models for enhancing his therapeutic acumen. He advises early career therapists to remain open to the professional opportunities that come their way. “You're gonna learn from your colleagues, from the experience,” he says. “You never know how these little things are gonna play out, and I don't think that's something that you can appreciate until you're on your own.”
