247 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Can a Group Practice Retain Good Clinicians? With Cassandra Greenwald

“I think you should be doing this because you want to do therapy, foster and nurture new therapists in the field, and build a business that reflects your values. You should not be doing this because you need people to make money for you.” - Cassandra Greenwald

What is BOPO without a featured practice owner? It’s an opportunity to take stock of group practice life as interpreted by clinical team members, aka the people we, as owners, are responsible for and must answer to.

Happy clinicians are vital to a thriving practice, especially since not every therapist is interested in being a sole proprietor. So, how do owners navigate the tricky mechanics of operating a business while providing meaningful group guidance without losing their sh*t? Good question. Enter Cassandra Greenwald, LCSW, CADC, of Rowan Tree Counseling, with heartfelt answers for employees and owners.

We poke at some tender spots: an owner’s right to privacy vs an employee’s desire for transparency, individual ambitions vs collective objectives, and the financial realities of operating within a capitalist economy. But discomfort isn’t synonymous with crisis. Practice owners and employees should welcome a bit of heat as it often sparks meaningful change.

Cassandra offers a unique perspective on practice participation, given that they’re an early-career therapist with decades of work experience outside the field. They’re sympathetic to the struggles of ownership yet passionate about considered employee involvement. “If you want [therapists] to show up as fully engaged, determined, and hardworking, give them the space to do that. Do what you can to keep fostering that.”

I’m here for the group practices about to enter their collaborative era!
