237 - BOPO04: The Burnt Out Practice Owner: What Do You Do When Managing Your Group Practice Starts To Feel Like A Burden? With Rebel Therapist™ Creator Annie Schuessler

“Managing doesn't just mean setting up systems and handing them to people. It also means you're probably gonna be telling the same person the same thing, like 10 or 20 times.” - Annie Schuessler

There’s a thin line between burden and bliss when you own a group practice. Rebel Therapist™ creator Annie Schuessler didn’t realize she’d crossed it until she weighed her past motivations against her ownership experience. “If I didn’t have a group practice now, would I build one?” she recalls. “I was like, Oh, hell no! I really would not.”

Annie joins me to discuss assuming the risks of practice ownership, the importance of having a supportive bestie, and predictions for the future of the group practice model.

As much as we wish it were otherwise, money occupies a lot of a practice owner’s headspace. Annie agrees. “I definitely had affection and love for the therapists I worked with. Our main purpose was serving clients well, and there's this other purpose of making sure that we're bringing in money, both for me and for them, and [sustaining] the thing,” she says. “The practice owner is the one who's gonna eat it if there's no money, and that’s not the right fit for everybody.”

As an owner, you are the team’s emotional energy container. You also shoulder all of the practice’s financial risk. While Annie doesn’t see that changing, she does think there’s room to evolve into a more holistic “yes/and” model in which clients and staff are well cared for. “I like the idea of group practices staying somewhat small, being super different from things like Better Help,” she says. “They’re very dedicated to serving clients [and] they wanna make a good living at it.”
