235, BOPO 03 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Do You Transition From Burnout To Visionary? with Maureen Werrbach, The Group Practice Exchange

“If you are a liberation, anti-oppression focused person, I don't know how you can be operating any sort of business without feeling some level of burnout.” - Maureen Werrbach

Hey, practice owner, how would you define your role in that business you worked so hard to create? Are you a visionary focused on pursuits related to company culture or community initiatives? Or are you a dedicated integrator, dutifully keeping up with basics like billing, payroll, and website upgrades? Not all practice owners are cut out for both roles, btw! And, a tendency towards one over the other isn’t cause for self-criticism; there’s enough shame associated with burnout as it is.

The question is a self-assessment exercise.

Maureen Werrbach, LCPC, is a visionary for sure. She owns Urban Wellness, a multi-location group practice in the Chicago area. She’s also the innovative mind behind The Group Practice Exchange, where she counsels owners on successfully starting and scaling their businesses. Oh, and she’s just published the first issue of The Visionary, her first print and digital magazine.

We’re throwing pipin’ hot honest-tea on the realities of practice ownership.

“What's got me to this point came with a lot of mistakes…and hard conversations,” Maureen says. She’s reworked those lessons into practical guidance for owners who need to shed some of the task-oriented duties and emotional weight they’re carrying––like managing employee expectations––so they can better embody their visionary potential.

Maureen says it’s okay to grow slowly into that visionary role. It’s also OK to partner with one instead, although she admits it's not always ideal. Ultimately, the goal is to be secure in how you operate the practice and confident in what you’re putting into the world.
