227 - Sarah Bryski-Hamrick - Therapy is Political: Pursuing Camaraderie Over Capitalism

“We're participating in a community together, and the healer is one part of that community that is integral, but is only a part." - Sarah Bryski-Hamrick

I’m gonna subhead this one, “A Simpatico Of Sarahs,” not just because the alliteration pleases me. Sarah Bryski-Hamrick is a like-minded liberation-focused, anti-exploitation-oriented therapist and business coach who believes therapy IS political. She also believes that caring for our personal and professional selves is imperative, especially if we hope to break free from capitalism. We’re talking power to ALL people!

But first comes the hard work of deconstruction. Building strong anti-capitalist communities begins with knowledge of our opponent. “Capitalism,” says Sarah, “is a political and economic system that works based off profit not off of what the people actually need.” It’s time to kick this consumption-based aspirational structure to the curb and usher in whatever we build next, sans the racism, classism, colonialism, and individualism that has separated humankind from its true compassionate and communal nature for nearly half a millennium.

The second step on our journey towards anti-capitalism is a messy but miraculous mourning period. Sarah is deeply empathetic to those of us just starting down the path. “I think many leftists have this realization, this painful grieving process of, ‘This feeling of sh*ttiness is not me; it’s systemic. It’s not the choices I’ve made.’” Thrash and cry, babes! It’s part of the beautiful, painful process.

All is far from hopeless with folks like Sarah in the mix. She works primarily with a Millenial and Gen Z clientele in private practice, helping them rewrite the inherited narrative of productivity above all else. “My biggest and most important specialty is offering therapy through an anti-capitalist lens to leftist patients. That includes folks on the socialist, communist, and Dem-Soc spectrum,” she says.

On the business coaching side, Sarah supports therapists facing the added pressures of creating worthwhile (and profitable) therapy practices within a system that devalues our service-oriented expertise, not to mention the grassroots organizing that will ultimately upend the whole profit-over-people juggernaut. She’s holding space for therapists to “learn how to be small business owners without exploiting the people they treat or other therapists.”

You can’t see me pumping my fist in solidarity but know that these Sarahs are sincerely in sync.
