221 - Elena Rego - The Holy Witch’s Guide to Sacred Soul Magic

“Belief is a spell, and we carry a particular type of belief about the world and the way the world behaves around us.” - Elena Rego

Witchcraft has always been a radical act, and I am never more in my element than when I’m playing with tarot, crystals, and even my houseplants. This tracks since witches often work with the elements of earth, air, fire, water, and spirit to enact personal or societal transformation. Elena Rego isn’t “just” a witch; she’s the force behind The Holy Witch and The School of Holy Witchery, and our conversation isn’t “just” about the much-maligned tradition of witchcraft. Instead, we explore rituals that reconnect us to our inherent wholeness, we reclaim honest, inclusive dialogue, and we revel in the juiciness that is Lilith: the original witch.

“What I do at The Holy Witch,” says Elena, “combines my social work, mental health background, and deep feminine spirituality.” As a practicing witch for nearly 30 years, Elena has woven those experiences together to inform her priestess work as a ritualist and teacher. Her spiritual path is grounded in deep shamanism, animism, feminism, and magic, and the desire to serve the collective unfoldment as spiritually rooted, connected, and potent witches. “What brought me here is the alchemy of those [previous] careers, along with my own spiritual yearning for an expression that felt liberating and affirming,” she explains. “I couldn't find that in Christianity or Catholicism, which was what I was raised in.”

Elena has over 130K followers on Instagram, all hungry for daily doses of her witchy wisdom. I’m one of them, and the word that comes up for me whenever I engage with Elena’s work is intention––living with purpose, embodying my awareness, and having the courage to create change. The word that’s on repeat during our conversation is sovereignty––the ability (and courage) to choose the direction of one’s life. Elena’s brand of witchcraft places that dominion at its center, prompting folks to interrogate and unravel the ties that bind them to outdated, oppressive modes of being. “I won't do spells for you, but I'll teach you how because your agency is important,” she says, adding, “The sovereignty that you get comfortable with holding is critical to your own empowerment and your own healing.”

Witches be out here resisting, reclaiming, and revolutionizing in force!
